While an orthodontic emergency is rare, when it does occur, we are here for you. If you are experiencing severe pain or need help with an appliance problem, call our office for an emergency appointment.
If a piece of your braces comes loose or breaks off, put it in a plastic baggie and bring it with you. Use wax on any pieces that poke you in the cheek. Use needle-nosed pliers to adjust a wire that may be sticking out.
Don’t allow a damaged appliance to remain in your mouth. Come to us as soon as you can.
After getting braces, it’s not uncommon to experience general soreness and tenderness, especially when eating. For this reason, especially in the first several days following treatment, try to eat soft foods. If your gums get irritated, rinse your mouth with a warm salt-water mouthwash. Acetaminophen is also an option.
If you don’t wear your headgear as instructed, you can also experience discomfort. If the facebow becomes bent, call our office. Make sure you are wearing your headgear for the amount of time your orthodontist recommended. This will help eliminate any issues before they can start.
Loose Bracket, Wire or Poking Wire
If your bracket or band is still attached to the wire, leave it there and use wax on the tip. If the bracket breaks off, save it. You may be able to maneuver a loose wire back into place with tweezers. For pesky wires that poke the inside of your cheek, use a pencil eraser to gently coax the wire down, or put a piece of wax on the end.
Remember, these are all temporary solutions. Always make an appointment right away when these things happen. We can fix them not only for your comfort but for the integrity of your braces so they continue to work as they should. If you’re experiencing any of the above issues, call us immediately at (630) 515-2727.
