At Downers Grove Orthodontics, we know that, if you are a teenager, you probably do not like hearing that you need braces. The good news is that you have more options than your parents had if they wore braces. You will also be happy to hear that we do our very best to make you as comfortable as possible during the entire process.
Believe it or not, braces can be stylish too!
How Long Will Treatment Take?
Everyone is different when it comes to how long they need to wear braces. It mostly depends upon three things:
- When you receive treatment: The earlier you can get started with your orthodontic treatment, the less time you will likely need to wear braces. That is because early treatment makes it possible for Dr. Balakrishnan to monitor your jaw growth, and provide any extra treatment you might need. It is also true, however, that some teens need to wait until they’re a bit older to start treatment, owing to several individual factors.
- The type of treatment you receive: Treatment could take approximately one year if you have only a minor issue, or two years if your orthodontic issues are more extensive. There really is no way to predict an exact length of time you need to wear braces because it all depends on how your teeth react to our efforts to reposition them.
- Compliance: Compliance means that you follow directions in caring for your braces and appliances. If you don’t do this, it could make your total treatment time longer than necessary.
Our Options for Braces
We are pleased to offer our patients several different styles and types of braces. The most popular types are ceramic, invisible, metal, and in some cases Invisalign is an option. Dr. B will give you more information about each type when you come in for a consultation with your parents.
Millions of teenagers wear braces to improve the health of their teeth, jaws, and gums as well as give them a more attractive smile. We know that you probably have a lot of questions about getting braces and we’re happy to answer them when you come in for your first appointment.
